This year, a Middle Eastern tour group arrived at Shanghai Pudong Airport with seven people carrying more than 40 fully packed suitcases, weighing over 500 pounds in total.
During their 10-day stay in Shanghai, they filled more than 20 empty suitcases with their shopping haul—and then bought dozens more. By the time they left, they had paid more than RMB 7,000 in excess baggage fees.
And opening those suitcases reveals just how enthusiastic foreign visitors can be about shopping in China.
One blogger who has been shopping in China for three consecutive years shared a practical tip: spend months browsing Taobao before your trip, place your orders shortly before departure, and have your purchases delivered directly to your hotel. Bring two large suitcases filled with old clothes you no longer need, donate them to clothing recycling bins in China, and use the extra space for your new purchases.
Of course, if you simply can’t resist China’s shopping temptation, you may end up buying several more suitcases—and paying a hefty price for the extra baggage.
